A Step back in Time to Uruguay’s Colonia del Sacramento

You’re invited to step back in time and experience the historic city of Colonia del Sacramento, in Uruguay. A regular ferry takes over 3 hours to reach Colonia, but with your business class seat on our fast ferry, you’ll be there in just 1 hour and 15 minutes, giving you much more time to explore this beautiful slice of cobblestoned history.

Colonia del Sacramento was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese and is renowned for its old cobblestone streets and colorful houses, reminiscent of old Lisbon. It is one of the oldest cities in Uruguay, and its entire historic quarter has been designated Mankind’s Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

This tour is self-guided, except for the 1-hour group tour in Colonia’s historic district. The boat company coordinator will receive you in Colonia and coordinate your group tour, lunch and the ticket for the hop-on/hop-off bus for your transfer to town and leisure time in the city.

Peninsula Valdes’ Unique Marine Fauna Heaven

Peninsula Valdes is one of the largest marine wildlife reserves in the entire world, and a prime spot for viewing a diverse collection of wildlife. It was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its global significance as a marine wildlife refuge for several threatened species.

The scenic Peninsula Valdes, where arid landscapes contrast with the blue crystalline sea, is home to an important breeding population of the endangered southern Right Whale (whale season takes place from June to early December), southern sea lions, orcas (also known as “killer whales”), Magellanic penguins (penguin season is from mid-September to early April), as well as the largest continental colony of southern elephant seals in the entire world. National Geographic listed the Peninsula Valdes as one of the 10 best places in the world for whale-watching.

The inner part of the peninsula boasts rheas, guanacos (American Llama), hairy armadillos, ostriches and maras (very similar to hares). A high diversity and range of birds live in the peninsula as well; at least 181 species.

An up-close encounter with the giant Southern Right Whale

Learn why National Geographic lists Peninsula Valdes as one of the 10 best places in the world for whale-watching. We’ll embark on a whale-watching adventure to get up-close and personal with one of the largest mammals on Earth: the Southern Right Whale!

One of the world’s rarest species of whale, the Southern Right Whale got its name because of the nature of its personality: easy to approach, friendly, and yielding large volumes of oil; making it therefore the “right” whale to hunt!

These whales are one of the more interactive whale species as they are usually on the water’s surface, which makes for a great viewing experience. They are very safe to approach and are often curious about boats passing by. They are playful and can be seen exhibiting unique behavior such as “sailing”, where they use their elevated tails to catch the wind; “lobtailing”, slapping it on the water; “headstanding,” where they rise in a vertical position with their head high above the air; and the most exciting, “breaching” where the whale jumps out of the water spinning, and landing with a huge splash!

We will spend approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes navigating before returning to the port.

An Up-Close & Personal Experience Walking among the Cute Magellanic Penguins

Get ready for a delightful encounter with some of the cutest and most charismatic creatures on the planet: the Magellanic penguins! Punta Tombo Reserve is home to the world’s largest colony of Magellanic penguins, giving you the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with over a hundred thousand of these adorable creatures, which are only found on the Falkland Islands and the coasts of Argentina and Chile.

This is a long half-day group tour (the visit to the Punta Tombo Magellanic Penguins reserve lasts 2 hours), but it’s usually combined with at least 1 other tour option in the area making it a full-day tour.

All about the Largest Dinosaurs that Ever Lived: Patagonian Paleontology Museum

Millions of years ago, Patagonia was a subtropical rain forest filled with dinosaurs, including one of the largest creatures ever to walk the Earth: “Given the size of these bones, which surpass any of the previously known giant animals, the new dinosaur is the largest animal known that walked on Earth,” reported the BBC about a new species of titanosaur, unearthed in Argentina. This dinosaur was about 65 feet (20 meters) high – equal to a seven-story building - and would have weighed 77 tons (equivalent to approximately 14 elephants).

The Patagonian soil was also where the fossils of the largest carnivorous dinosaur in the world were found, surpassing the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex in size.

We’ll visit the Egidio Feruglio Museum, one of the most important scientific institutions in Argentina, and an undisputed international reference in paleontology.

An Exquisite Welsh Tradition: Tea Time at Gaiman Village

This quaint and charming town appears to have been arrested in time: streets with irrigation ditches watering trees not native to Patagonia, and buildings brought in from faraway lands - such as chapels constructed by the Welsh upon arriving to Patagonia in the 19th century. Added to this seemingly age-old land, there are customs that have been brought into it from afar: such as the traditional Welsh tea, prepared according to ancient customs that give it a unique flavor and perfume; all accompanied by delicious cake.

One of Gaiman’s most prominent visitors came to this region of Patagonia in 1995: Lady Diana, Princess of Wales, was there to enjoy a leisurely 5 o’clock tea.

Seven Panoramic Boardwalks of the Mighty Perito Moreno Glacier

Prepare to visit one of the world’s most awe-inspiring and unique glaciers: The Perito Moreno. This bright white ice giant showcases its mighty glory in the Patagonian Glaciers National Park, which has been declared Mankind’s Natural Heritage site by UNESCO. The park’s vast size not only gives it the distinction of being the largest ice mantle in the world, after Antarctica, but also the third largest fresh water reserve on the planet.

The Perito Moreno is of the few glaciers in the world actually growing and advancing, as opposed to the majority of the world’s glaciers, which are retreating and melting due to the effects of global warming. The ice that serenely sits above the water measures an impressive 262 feet (80 meters), which is just about the height of a 25-story building! And while that’s an incredibly large size for the human eye to take in, consider that this measurement is only 15% of the glacier’s total height. Five times more ice is hidden underwater.

Our destination is the panoramic boardwalks which overlook the Perito Moreno Glacier. Here, amidst the backdrop of the majestic, snow-capped Andes, you’ll find yourself immersed in an unforgettable glacier experience, while enjoy amazing picture-taking opportunities from the seven panoramic balconies facing the front of the glacier.

While the glacier itself is definitely the main attraction, the park also boasts remarkable scenery as well as glacial streams, small lagoons, crevasses, gullies, and plenty of ice formations that’ll dazzle the eye, surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Andes Mountain range, lakes and forest areas.

These intriguing, cinnamon-hued trees are known for their attractive, smooth and tan bark, peppered with white spots; and giving the forest a captivating mystique. It’s widely rumored that Walt Disney drew inspiration from this myrtle forest to create his animated classic ’Bambi’ but there’s actually no evidence to back up this claim.

Unlike Niagara Falls, which is surrounded by developments such as casinos, a revolving restaurant, and coffee shops, Iguazu Falls are located within one of the few remaining inland rainforests in South America, the Atlantic rainforest, which is a haven for more than 2,000 plant species, about 400 birds species, and 80 types of mammals!
